After his Lukas Pöstelberger’s third place finish yesterday, BORA – hansgrohe did it again today as sprinter Sam Bennett sprinted to a photo-finish third place after an amazing lead out until the final meters from his teammates. This is the fifth podium result for BORA – hansgrohe.

At 11:50 the peloton started into stage 6 at the 100th Giro d’Italia, start was in the city Castrovillari to the famous and for the first-time stage finish Alberobello over 224 kilometers on a basically flat route. But the last 40 kilometers were undulating and went slightly up. The final kilometers had to be undertaken carefully because after a short climb the last 700 meters went downhill before the riders will sprint into the finish.

The race started, like the previous days, with an early breakaway, two riders were going clear and had a gap of more than 3 minutes. BORA – hansgrohe stayed in the peloton working for Sam Bennett today.
The group was gone for most of the stage, with 20 kilometers remaining the sprinter teams started to form for their leaders and the gap dropped steadily.

When the breakaway was caught, it was Team BORA – hansgrohe who took control over the pace in front of the peloton. The peloton crossed the city Alberobello with 10 kilometers remaining and the hard fight for the positions started. Sam Bennett was well protected from his leadout guys Lukas Pöstlberger and Rudi Selig.

On the last meters, Sam was on the wheel of Rudi Selig, later winner C. Ewan (Orica-Scott) was on the left side, Sam with F. Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors) on his wheels on the left. All three crossed the finish line and after a photo finish the team knew Sam Bennett took again third place. In 7 stages BORA – hansgrohe has now five podium results, with one win and second place and three third places.

“After this leadout the boys would have deserve this victory, they did a great job today. The giro is running pretty well, with 5 podium results in 7 stages we are showing that the team has a strength and depth. Sam was only bet by some centimeters.” – Jens Zemke. Sports director

“It was a hectic and really a tricky final. I really don’t know what happened but the boys did really a great job and I want to thank them. We are a pretty young group here but we work so good together and today it was really close to the win.”
